Dermal Filler Injections
Soft tissue augmentation can enhance one’s appearance by replacing lost volume to areas of depletion such as cheeks, temples, nasolabial folds, lips, chin, and under the eyes. It can also be used to correct asymmetry of the face and uneven contour of the nose. It can be used alone or in addition to cosmetic surgery.
What to Expect:
Temporary side effects from injections include but are not limited to: bruising, swelling, pain, tenderness at the injection site, redness, firmness, itching, or discoloration. Sometimes a small bead may be palpable under the skin for a few days to weeks. If you are prone to cold sores the minor trauma may activate a dormant cold sore.
Categories of Volumizing Agents:
Since there are many products available on the market to choose from it is highly advisable that you obtain specific recommendations by the professional performing your procedure.
Hyaluronic acid products – Restylane, Perlane, Restylane Silk, Juvaderm, Juvederm Voluma XC, Belotero
These agents are very safe and widely used in the cosmetic industry. They provide a temporary correction that varies with the site injected and the product, but the average duration is up to 1 year. The products are transparent so there is a small risk of Tyndall effect (blue hue) if placed very superficially. If a product needs to be removed an enzyme called hyaluronidase can be used to dissolve the product.
Calcium Hydroxy Appetite – Radiesse
This agent is used for correction of deeper folds and cheeks but can be placed elsewhere in the face. It is radiopaque and can be visible on x-rays or CT scans. Sometimes Radiesse can be felt under the skin for prolonged periods of time due to material collecting in one area. Studies show Radiesse can last 12-18 months.
Poly L-lactic acid – Sculptra
Sculptra is a biostimulator. Small molecules are injected into the skin which stimulate your body to produce collagen. After 3 months the molecules degrade into sugar and water and are absorbed, but your collagen remains. Studies show collagen levels to be maintained at 25 months. Risks from Sculptra also include subcutaneous nodule formation. This is a bead or ball of collagen under the skin which usually can be felt but not seen.
Polymethyl Methacrolate – Artefill
Artefill is a non-resorbable filler that stimulates your body to produce collagen. Since it does not absorb into your tissue it can be present for years. Artefill is contraindicated in people with known collagen allergies. You may receive a skin test prior to injection if desired or waive the skin test at your own risk.
