Breast Implant Removal
Recently, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of women opting for breast implant removal surgeries. These operations, formally referred to as breast explant surgeries, tend to be fairly simple and require minimal surgery and recovery time. In fact, many women say the breast implant removal surgery was easier than the initial breast augmentation. Why Consider A Breast Explant?
You may want to remove your breast implants for a number of reasons. Discomfort, dissatisfaction, and personal preference are among the leading reasons many women choose to undergo breast explant surgeries. On the other hand, many women remove breast implants with the intention of replacing them with implants of a different size. In rare cases, breast implants can lead to health concerns due to capsular contracture or rupturing, necessitating removal immediately.
Common Reasons For Removal
- Personal preference
- Discomfort caused by implants
- Capsular contracture
- Minor to severe rupture of the silicone implant
- Removal with the intention to replace implants
Lately, there has been more and more talk about supposed negative health effects caused by silicone breast implants. Some women are saying that “breast implant toxicity” is leading to fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, and more. While there is significant data supporting the safety of breast implants, the FDA does not cite any of these symptoms in relation to breast implants. However, we understand that there is no person that is more aware of the way your body is feeling than you personally. For further in-depth information, please schedule a consultation.
Implant Removal Surgery & Recovery
Removing breast implants is generally a straightforward surgery with a relatively short and manageable recovery. First, you will meet with one of our doctors for a breast explant consultation. Next, the surgery will be performed under general anesthesia, taking roughly 3 hours to complete. During the surgery, incisions will be made in the same region as original scarring if possible.
Recovery times are generally fairly short, with most women returning to work after about a week. As always, recovery differs per client, and you should consult your doctor for accurate recovery expectations after the surgery. It is normal to experience some discomfort and aching through the healing process. Immediately after the breast explant surgery, breasts will generally appear deflated. Usually, breasts will regain some shape and volume after a few weeks. Many women choose to follow a breast implant removal with a breast lift, resulting in tighter, fuller breasts immediately after the surgery.
Difference Between En Bloc Implant Removal & Standard Implant Removal
The doctors at Vincent Surgical Arts typically perform what is referred to as an en bloc implant removal. To understand the difference between an en bloc implant removal and a standard breast implant removal, we need to understand what a tissue capsule is. The capsule is soft scar tissue that forms around a breast implant after the initial augmentation surgery. Generally the capsule is undetectable, however, sometimes it forms into hard scar tissue leading to discomfort and aching. An en bloc implant removal surgery removes the breast implant and the tissue capsule at the same time. A standard implant removal simply removes the breast implant and is not concerned with removing the capsule.
